Who Are The Edmonton Skeptics? |
|
"…skepticism is a method, not a position. Ideally, skeptics do not go into an investigation closed to the possibility that a phenomenon might be real or that a claim might be true. When we say we are 'skeptical,' we mean that we must see compelling evidence before we believe." (Skeptic Magazine)
Of course! There are plenty of logical folks in the Edmonton area who are interested in a local Skeptical Movement where it we organize, meet, and discuss issues relating to philosophy, science, and rational thought. Please join the group, invite others, and post your thoughts. Join up. Invite your friends.
Please visit our Facebook group and feel free to post links, videos, or discussion topics about science versus pseudo-science, religion versus secularism, church versus state, reason versus belief, politics versus conspiracy, evolution versus creationism, and anything else that is ready to be openly debated. Anyone can post to this group, but it is a place for open, rational, and science-based debate on topics about the paranormal, conspiracy theories, scams, shams, fundamentalism, moral absolutism, alternative medicines, and all around general quackery. No one will be censored but prepare to be torched in a discussion if your logic is flawed. |

UPDATE 2008-10-01: Due to some scheduling issues, we've changed this to just a "drinking skeptically" night at the Billiards Club on Whyte. Come visit, and check the Facebook Group for more info. Please mark your calendars for our next "On Topic" meeting to be held at [TBD] on October 2, 2008. Theme for this month: Space Skeptics An "On Topic" event isn't just about listening -- the short presentations are mainly designed to introduce topics of discussion for all attendees to be a part of. Conversations will be open and unmoderated after a topic is introduce. We will have a few Edmonton Skeptics members address attendees with quick introductory presentations on the on topic issues to be discussed (conspiracies, pseudoscience, etc) out there and provide information on the strong evidence available to counter these unsupported ideas. For future events we hope to be able to bring in experts and/or local speakers on our chosen topic, but for now we'll be relying on the minds and readings of our membership. Come ready to discuss and debate! Note: We may take about 30 minutes at the start of the meeting to do a group member "check in" and take care of a few linger bits of group business. |

Sign up for an account on this site for more access. It's free, of course. And you will be able to add articles and review notes from our past meetings. Also, we're working on setting up some project management tools to track some of our project ideas and their progress. If you'd like to participate in working on any of these projects you need an account to access that part of the site. |
